I was out in the desert near Timbuktu in Mali in January '08 and camped with some English friends who had a 'Kelly Kettle' with them.  It had been a while since I used one and with a lot of desert brush about it was easy enough to fire up.  The friends eventually traded it with some Bedouins (Tamashek) for some leatherwork and the kettle headed off on the back of a camel over the dunes.  The Tamaskek were well impressed with its simplicity and speed .....

over their local charcoal braziers. They were running around with excitement!  No more charcoal to hump around!  Nothing better than to sit in the shade of a thorn tree and brew a lot of sweet green tea after a hard days camel ride!
